St. Augustine Sunrise

It was a cold Saint Augustine morning. An Egret squawked, alarmed at my arrival. The sky was dark and the air was still. A plump orange cat came close to me and huddled up trying to stay warm. The horizon grew brighter with every passing minute. Fish started jumping as if anxious to greet the new day. Flocks of sea birds flew parallel to the islands silhouetted by the rising sun. Squirrels scurried about trying to grab a quick meal. Then the sun peaked the horizon. A welcoming glow overtook the land as everything seemed to stop and meet the new day. A small group of birds chirped with excitement as the gentle morning sun embraced them and broke them free of the cold darkness that had held on to them for seemingly an eternity.

The beauty of this moment was broken by the grinding of engines starting. The people that lived near this are were starting to leave for another monotonous routine, completely oblivious to the beauty that lay right before their eyes, totally unaware of the moments they miss, fully unmindful of the canvas that God had painted for them to enjoy.

This is why I'm a photographer, to bring the beauty of those moments to the eyes of the inattentive- Cory Shannon
